My Artwork on Home Décor by Kate England

Now you can find my patterns from on an array of custom-made home décor products at Roostery, the unique marketplace for indie design. From throw pillows, napkins, placemats to tea towels. 

Over the next year the product line will expand to furniture like chairs and couches to bedding like duvets and sheets as well as curtains. Take a look!

I've just finished a course held by Lilla Roger's illustration agency. It's the brand new course MATS Creating Collections for Home Décor, that covers conceptualising the product design for  a whole collection. How to bring your art to life on a wide variety of products made from the five most popular substraits used in the home décor market, wood, ceramics, metal, fabrics and glass.

It was my ambition to not simply paste my art onto products, but to be thoughtful about what special opportunity for creation that each substrate offers. To think about the actual product too, to combine beauty and function. Not to put the art on something but to turn the art into something new - like a metamorphosis. 

Art director Margo Tantau, and international art agent Lilla Rogers, provided lots of fun and informational aha-moments, inspiration and knowledge. It's been a blast, I feel like I'm almost exploding from creative imagination, and it's a dream for me to work with the home décor market! 

The pace of the course has been extremely intense, especially since it coincided with a busy freelance period where I've been creating around 8 icons or illustrations per day. We all know how little time there can be at the end of the day, after a very long work day, dinner and a minimum of chores! So it's been tough, but very inspiring and I'm still mulling over where to go next with this knowledge. 

And before I catch up with connecting with friends and family, doing laundry, responding to emails and other much neglected chores, I've updated my portfolio with illustrations, hand lettering and patterns that I made during the course. I hope you enjoy taking a peek!

Make Art That Sells. Poster Design & Hand Lettering by Kate England

Here's an event poster for the advertising market that's part of the 2015 Make Art That Sells: Assignment Bootcamp. It's a live brief, which gives it an extra thrilling feeling!

I made quite a few sketches, but when I started thinking about the audience, the project seemed to fall into place. The audience is described as: 

  • living in Brighton (where the poster will be displayed) 
  • cool and artistic
  • men and women

I had thought of drawing scenery from Brighton, but that might come off as a touristy for people who live there.  The other obvious aspect to focus on is art, inspiration and meeting other artists, since that's what the event is about.

Hmm... in the end I settled for this more designy and edgy layout, incorporating globes and lines that are inspired by maps and journeys. The flowerlike shape is inspired by the architecture of the Brighton Dome, the scalloped shapes around the entrance as well as the ceiling of the concert hall. Flowers, blooming, growing your art and your connections... and going on a journey. 

I've combined a 3-D treatment of a sans serif font and a hand drawn, single line vector script font that I started creating for the editorial illustration But I don't like to meditate and wall art piece Bloom Where You Are Planted that you can see below.

Speaking of quotes, and blooming, I'm not sure where it comes from, but it's one of my favourites. Bloom Where You Are Planted. Sometimes typography plays a role in my work, especially hand lettering created either with vectors or with ink. In the Hand Drawn Food Kit there's quite a number of words and phrases to go with the illustrations. I really enjoy it, and it's an area I'm thinking of expanding with quotes. Hand lettering would also fit nicely into my dream idea for making an illustrated recipe book... Daydreams to turn into actions...

Every Halloween, The Iconfactory is transformed into a spooky version of itself. A wicked double! A spooky incarnation of itself populated by zombies, pumpkins, monsters, vampires, witches, werewolves, ghosts, and, haunted houses.

The Halloween makeover combines the imagination of artists with the attention to detail and understanding of user interface of designers. This is the signature style of the Iconfactory that helps us create beautiful software experiences for clients all over the world. But here we've added a dash of humour!

This year part of the makeover includes scary portraits of all of us employees, you can see mine above! It's Ged's friend, talented illustrator Kyle Webster who created these wonderful portraits for us.
